Winter: Amaterasu Omikami
Digital C Print
20"H x 30"W
Amaterasu Omikami, the goddess of the sun, shut
herself in a cave to protest an injustice
done to her.
As long as she remained in seclusion, the world was plunged in darkness.
The gods and goddesses all sat around the cave and set up a mirror across
from the entrance.
Ame-No-Uzume, the goddess of merriment, turned over a washtub
and began a sensual dance,
tapping the beat on the tub. Amaterasu peeked out to
see what the noise was about, and when
she caught her reflection, she stared at
the radiance of her own form, and light returned to the world.
